File level security permissions are used to protect data between user accounts on the same computer. Permissions such as FULL CONTROL, MODIFY, READ & EXECUTE, READ and WRITE can be set
to limit data access and privileges but at the same time allow data to be share across multiple users. Officially Windows XP Professional is require to have NTFS permissions however there exist a secrete technique to enable NTFS permissions in Windows XP Home. This secrete requires booting into SAFE MODE. First put all the files you want to share in the ‘Shared Documents Folder’ and then boot into SAFE MODE.
Booting into SAFE MODE may differ from computers and manufacturers however typically it requires pressing F8 on the keyboard during POST. Another option is to force the computer to boot in SAFE MODE by using the SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY
.
To access SYSTEM CONFIGURATION UTILITY simply type MSCONFIG in the RUN command
Next navigate to BOOT.INI tab and under BOOT OPTIONS make sure to place a check mark next to /SAFEBOOT’ & ‘MINIMAL. Now every time the computer boots up, it will automatically enter SAFE MODE. Remember to disable these options later on other wise the computer will continuously boot into SAFE MODE.
Now that the computer is in ‘SAFE MODE’
- Open the ‘Shared Documents ‘ folder.
- Find the files/folder you want to set permissions on and ‘right-click’ and select ‘properties’.
- Navigate to the ‘Security Tab’, (notice this tab does not exist in normal mode).
- Now you can either add an entire group or edit any existing users and set their permissions accordingly.
- Click OK.
- Remember to open ‘System Configuration Utility‘ and disable the ‘SAFE MODE’ options.
Enjoy..
